The Preamble, or introduction, of the constitution listed six goals to guide the making of the constitution: To form a more perfect Union, to establish justice, to insure domestic Tranquility, to provide for the common defense, to promote the general welfare, and to secure the Blessings of Liberty.
To Form a more perfect Union
During the Articles of Confederation, the USA's first Constitution, states acted almost like independent nations. They would not work together on major issues. In the new constitution, the states would act as a single nation.
To Establish Justice
The constitution made sure everyone was treated equally by providing a national court system, something which the Articles of Confederation lacked, to protect peoples rights and to settle disputes between states.
To Insure Domestic Tranquility
The constitution ensures that peace is kept among the people. This was important after Shay Rebellion in 1786, in which people rioted to express their anger at the government.
To Provide for the Common Defense
The constitution gives the Federal Government the power to maintain an army.
To Promote the General Welfare
The constitution promises to promote the welfare of US citizens by maintaining order and the economy.
To Secure the Blessings of Liberty
Finally, the constitution also guarantees us that our liberties will never be taken away.
