Checks and Balances: Each of the three branches of government can limit the powers of the others. This way, no one branch becomes too powerful.
The Legislative Branch:
- Can overrule a veto by the President with a 2/3 vote.
- Can impeach The President, supreme court justices, and judges.
- The Senate approves presidential appointments.
The Executive Branch:
- Veto bills
- Ability to call special sessions of Congress
- Can recommend legislation
- President appoints Supreme Court and other federal judges.
The Judicial Branch:
- Can declare laws made by Congress unconstitutional.
